    Human society has tolerated prostitution since the beginning of time. Pro
stitution has a long history that begins with the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Prostitution has always been a contentious and complex issue, and different socioeconomic, cultural, and political changes can be used to trace its progress. In the past, prostitution was seen as a legitimate and respectable occupation. In the temples of ancient Egypt, prostitutes were employed who had sex with the devotees. Prostitution was viewed as a legitimate profession and a vital component of society in ancient Greece and Rome, just as it is now. However, there was a vast range in the social standing of prostitutes, and they were frequently stigmatized.
The Christian church was very important in the Middle Ages in controlling prostitution. The church made an effort to outlaw prostitution since it was considered sinful. But due to the enormous demand for prostitution, the activity persisted in the shadows, and brothels were set up in metropolitan areas (Classen, 2019). Prostitution's perception saw considerable modifications in the 19th century. Cities grew and prostitution became more obvious with the expansion of industry and urbanization. Many women turned to prostitution as a method of survival at this time due to the social and economic challenges they faced. As a result, worries about public health emerged, and the state started to regulate prostitution. In order to control prostitution and safeguard the health of the military, the Contagious Diseases Acts were created in the 1860s.
