HIST E 1672
Long 1960s: Pop Music, Counterculture, Black Awakening
Choose TWO prompts to respond to and write a response using specific examples from the readings on our syllabus.
You are welcome to draw upon lectures and sections with appropriate citations. You may provide examples from other historical and cultural contexts to illustrate your position, but the majority of your essay should be dedicated to the scope of the course.
Your exam submission must be your original work, written without plagiarism or in collaboration with other students.
Use at least four sources from our reading list in your responses.
Please submit your exam on time in .doc, or .docx format through the “Midterm” assignment on Canvas. Late work without an extension will not receive a grade higher than 90%.
Length: 5-7 pages plus bibliography.
Format: Double-spaced, 12pt. font, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman, Chicago style. Include in-text citations and a separate bibliography
Please answer TWO of the following prompts.
1) Drawing from C.T. Vivian's observation, "I don't see anyone having struggles separate from music. I would think that a movement without music would crumble," provide two examples from the material covered in class that exemplify or problematize his point. What role did music play in the eyes of activists?
2) Choose three songs from the course syllabus that exemplify your understanding of the Long 1960s. For each song, locate where it comes from, who the composer or performer is, and why the song is important?
3)How do the songs of the Civil Rights Movement serve as historical documents of the Long 1960’s?
4) Building on the “Long 1960s” framework, what connections do you see between the music and the Black Awakening? How did they (or did they not) influence one another? Be specific.
