Hip-hop music and culture is often recognized as having roots in Africa, but the genre of music and the culture is original to the East coast of the United States. This lesson explores the impact of Hip-hop, and especially the MC, as it travels globally. Keep in mind the role of cultural producers--those creating the culture--and cultural consumers--those who consume the culture.

Emmanuel Jal was a Sudanese and was a child soldier at the age of seven when his mother was killed in the war of South Sudan and his father was a commander of Sudan people’s liberation army. Emmanuel’s father sent him to Ethiopia. Then a British aid worker name Sunshine Victoria, smuggled him out of Ethiopia and later espoused him. Emmanuel grew up in Britain and loved watching television. He loved watching rap songs and finally started writing hip hop songs on various social issues.
