Hierarchy and Power in Healthcare in Australia and Sociological Perspectives
Introduction
The aim of the paper is to look at the connection that hierarchy and power have in the healthcare system in Australia. The following paper will look at the Australian healthcare system, the power and the hierarchy that affect it. It will also look at the sociological theories and perspectives that affect the industry. It will aim to offer a unique perspective on the Australian healthcare system.
The main reason that this is important is because of the dominance of the medical field in the country. Any developed country in the world gives importance to the medical field. However, in countries like Australia, the medical field is given primary importance. This also adds to the traditional roles of medical professionals, such as doctors and nurses. The ideas of healthcare are primarily related to power and structure, and it is important to understand and discuss them in order to improve the healthcare system.
The Australian healthcare system is run by both the government and by private hospitals. It is funded by the taxes of the people. This is called Medicare and it pays for most the medical care that the people need. There is however, a need for private health insurance in the country as well. The biomedical perspective is also paid attention to. The free healthcare system that is provided by the government through Medicaid, has been described as one of the best medical systems in the world. It provides healthcare to all natural citizens of the country, and the opportunity for free healthcare to the permanent citizens and the refugees as well. This is important in terms of looking at the changes that could be made to improve the healthcare system and make it even better.
Hierarchy and Power in the Australian Healthcare System and Sociological Perspectives
Sociology can be defined as the scientific study of society. This includes the normal and abnormal patterns of relationships that can be found in society, social interaction and sometimes even culture. It looks at social order, change, social evolution and acceptance. Every sphere of human activity, such as education, medicine, gender, law, economy etc can be studied from a sociological perspective. Sociological research can be informative to almost every institution or agency.
This is especially important in the medical and healthcare sector. Healthcare is a service sector, which aims to improve the lives of human beings. Thus, having a sociological perspective on healthcare can be important as healthcare often depends on the society that they individual lives in. Social life, in many ways, has a large effect on morbidity and the quality of life, which is why it’s extremely important to minimize the factors that could be responsible for the illness of a person.
There is a large difference between medical sociology and sociology of health and illness. Sociology of Health and Illness looks at the effects that family interaction, employment and school have on health and illness (Schadewaldt, et al, 2016). It looks at why the person is seeking a particular type of medical aid, sociological pathology, and the type of compliance that they have with the medical system in the country (Perkins, et al, 2017). Medical sociology, however, to the relationship between the medical practitioner and the patient and the effect that medical practitioners have on the society around them (Meyer, 2017). Both of these branches have arisen from the realization that society has a huge influence on healthcare. The spread of diseases, for example, can be predicted by the socioeconomic background of the people, the ethnic traditions of the society and the area that they’re in. Diseases will spread faster in a culture where the people are constantly expected to be near each other, or how they can afford medicine.
Sociological analysis is often called perspective. There are different approaches to sociological perspective. There are three main perspectives that most sociologists use during research. The first is symbolic interactionism. This is a micro level of analysis and uses symbols and details of everyday life to gauge how the society is (Conrad, 2017). The second the functionalist perspective (Karvonen, et al, 2018). This is the macro approach and looks at society as a whole is made of each part of the society. The third is the conflict perspective, which is a macro level of analysis and focuses on the negative of society (Armstrong, 2015).
