For your supplementary assessment, you are required to reflect on some of the challenges surrounding the issue of torture. You should focus on these two points in your reflection (which you can write in essay form or with subtitles): 1. Write a reflection explaining how the common good is challenged or negated by this issue (see the Reading below) locally and globally (approximately 400 words). 2. Propose two or three ways to address the challenge, as an advocate, in order to achieve a more just community or society (approximately 800 words). In your answer, you will need to demonstrate your understanding of the Common Good and other CST principles. NB: You are not required to make reference to all CST principles; 3-5 CST principles will be sufficient. Reading. Pope Francis recently highlighted the importance of helping torture victims internationally. The 26th of June marked the United Nations’ International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. In the words of the UN Secretary General, "torture remains unacceptable and unjustified at all times, including during states of emergency, political instability, or even in a war. On this day, let us also pay tribute to all those who stand in solidarity with victims and their families – and reaffirm our commitment to ending this abominable and useless practice." (António Guterres, quoted at: http://www.un.org/en/events/torturevictimsday/) This International Day reinforces the work of the UN in confronting torture and other forms of treatment which are cruel, violent, degrading or inhumane. The Pope reiterated the UN’s call for an end to torture: “cruelty did not end at Auschwitz, at Birkenau. Today too, people are tortured; many prisoners are tortured at once, to make them speak … It is terrible! Today there are men and women in overcrowded prisons; they live – I’m sorry – like animals.” (quoted here: http://cathnews.com/cathnews/32405-we-must-help-victims-of-torturepope ) Such advocates are calling for outreach and support for all who have been caught in the cycle of suffering and abuse, even slow, painful death. They are calling on international teams and organisations to work together, especially with the vulnerable in mind, and with rehabilitation as a priority. Due date: 18 July, 2018 5pm.
