Unit Information (SASS) MNG93211 – Managing Information Systems (online) – SP4 / 2018 Assessment 2 & Assessment 3 – Systems Implementation Proposal Assessment 2 - Part A of Systems Implementation Proposal Due: Sunday 29 July 2018 Length: 2,000 words Weighting: 30% Assessment 3 - Part B of Systems Implementation Proposal Due: Sunday 12 August 2018 Length: 3,000 words Weighting: 40% Assessment topic The purpose of Assessment 2 and Assessment 3 is to evaluate your ability to develop a comprehensive implementation proposal for an information system that uses a systems approach. The proposal should be targeted at a potential ‘sponsor’ organisation (your workplace) that will need to be convinced of the appropriateness and effectiveness of the proposed new system. Part A of the proposal (Assessment 2) focuses on understanding your organization (or the organization you have chosen) and exploring the opportunity for IS/IT improvement (e.g., selecting an information system to support organizational’s strategic objectives) while Part B of the proposal (Assessment 3) focuses on designing and implementing the chosen system. Choose an information system (e.g., ERP systems, CRM systems, SCM Systems, Management Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, Executive Information Systems, Enterprise Portals, Data Warehouse & Data Mining Applications, Enterprise Collaboration Systems, Knowledge Management Systems, among others) that you have studied in this unit. Alternatively, you may wish to combine features of several systems. For the purposes of both Part A and Part B of the proposal, the IS/IT improvement should not focus on Apps, mobile devices, social media or similar aspects. If you are unsure, then consult your tutor. Your assignment should describe the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) discussed in Topic 3 of the subject. The proposed system must address an identifiable problem/opportunity that exists in the sponsor organisation (your workplace) and relate to particular aspects of the organisation’s overall strategic directions. It is important that you select the features of your system carefully and justify your selection. Do not just use (be critical of the use of) the standard features of a commercially available software package. For the purposes of this assignment, try to keep the system that you are proposing to a manageable size. Your proposed system could help the ‘sponsor’ organisation by:  improving an existing manual information system  introducing a new information system  creating a new business opportunity  improving organisational productivity. The sponsor is generally a senior person within the organisation who has the authority to approve such projects. An information system
is a software that helps the organizations to collect, store, manage and retrieve data. Information system is sometimes also known as a computerized information system “which covers people, machines or organized methods to collect, process, transmit and disseminate data representing information for the user or client”. http://en.m.wikipedia.org>wiki>information system.
Information system is an amalgamation of hardware, software and telecommunication networks that organizations create and deploy for successful data management. Most schools use a traditional student information system which comprises of a large number of manual processes for proper administration namely admissions, fee collection and submission, writing tests, evaluating teats written and grading them as well as documenting important information in files. This entire process proves very cumbersome taking into account the major influx of students into our school in recent years. The call of the day was to develop an upgraded student information system where the entire manual process will be automated, student data is collected and managed on a single platform and productivity of the institution is enhanced. Hence I suggested developing an ERP based software for better outcomes and save a lot of time and energy. (Bourgeois, n.d.)

ERP or Enterprise Resource Planning is an advanced information system where a lot of processes needed to make an organization work are integrated onto a common platform with a common database. The ERP assures distinctness, competence, increased capability and productivity in every department of an organization making day to day complex tasks very easy. ERP systems “facilitate regulatory compliance, reduce risks, fast track reporting” and also makes it easy for the “flow of real time information across departments so that businesses can make data driven decisions and manage performances” www.sap.com.

ERP will help students and teachers, administration and various groups across school campus to communicate freely, under coherent and productive conditions. With this information system the school will be able to conjure up an atmosphere where students get the facilities and amenities they deserve, the faculty assists and expedites the learning process in the classrooms, improves communication between management, student and teachers and the managerial staff are well equipped with knowledge and information that puts them in a position to be increasingly informative, helpful and productive.
