Recommendations to address gaps
Recommendations:
The nurses should be given some decision making power as this will enhance their skills and give them encouragement to work in a better way. Though this should be done under guidance and coordination with the physicians and it will allow the nurses to render their services properly.
There should be proper stress management classes for the nurses which can be done in some form of physical workout or meditation so that they can overcome all the challenges that they see througho
ut. This will increase the efficiency of the nurses and they will be able to support the family of the grieved.
Background
Nurses play significant role in the medical industry and during their professional life they undergo lot of emotional trauma. They do not just provide medical assistance to the doctors but also give healing therapy to the patients and emotional support to the relatives. Death of a patient is an outcome that the nurses encounter several times during their professional career and they therefore become effective support for the aggrieved families and relatives. These nurses therefore have to approach to the patients and their families through multiple approach as they are called to put an end-of-life care for the deteriorating patients. The nurses therefore adopt the coping strategy related to the death of the patient and they manage their emotions in a particular way and they therefore need supportive work environment in the ICU and other extensive care units.
The terminal care in ICU involved Organizational support, emotional intensity, uncertainty and ambiguity (Yates, 2012 ). The nurses who work in this setup have to deal with the inured and traumatic patients and their suffering and grief is not experienced and understood by the nurses practicing in other departments. Due to this reason the nurses who treat the traumatic and injured patients regularly in the ICU are exposed to sufferings and grief and there are no ways to deal this stress. The nurses also have to deal with the attitude expectations of the relatives as well as the patients. The greater emphasis is laid upon the role of the nurses in the Intensive Care Unit and how the nurses manage stress and emotional upheaval during emergency situations. The nurses who encounter several cases of demise of their patients several have to be emotionally strong and remain detached to cope up with the situation. The emotional management strategy is found to be very effective in this regard and helps the nurses to cope up with the stressful environment. Unlike the Physicians the nurses who are trained in holistic care have to undergo lot of stress during their professional career.
The nurses therefore must know various strategies to cope up in difficult situations, they should know the art of supporting the grieving families and simultaneously. They should know the ways to overcome the stress that the go through on regular basis because only after they are stable they can provide helping hand to the patient’s family and also do justice to their work. The paper thus elaborates on the psychology of the nurses and the extreme problems through which they undergo during their professional career. The nurses who work rigorously for the wellbeing of the patients do not have any decision making powers which further make them feel crippled. The paper is based on the study conducted through four research papers on practicing nurses in different organizations and it studies about the significant role of the nurses.
Relevance and significance of the problem
Relevance and significance of the problem
The paper lays emphasis upon the problems encountered by the nurses while taking care of the patients. The most significant of all the issues is the problem of dealing with the patients under the terminal care. The terminal care in ICU involves organizational support, emotional intensity, uncertainty and ambiguity (Yates, 2012 ). The nurses who work in this setup have to deal with the injured and traumatic patients and their grief stricken family members. The trauma that these nurses go through is not experienced and understood by the nurses practicing in other departments. Due to this reason the nurses who treat the traumatic and injured patients regularly in the ICU are exposed to sufferings and grief and there are no ways to deal this stress.
The nurses also have to deal with the expectations of the relatives of the patients. Thus in dealing with the ailing patients and to give continuous support to the families the nurses have to undergo lot of stress. They get emotionally drained as they have to face many unpleasant situations during their work, they have multiple experiences with death. The problem is significant as death being a natural phenomenon when comes to any patient it gets challenging for the nurses too as they have to deal with the families of the grieved as well as are required to manage their stress levels. They have to deal with the tough situations as the families generally have unrealistic expectations from the nurses and they have to remain sensitive towards the losses of the family members. Though some studies reveal that the nurses after experiencing such tough situation on regular basis get habituated of watching the patients die and they gradually develop better emotional management skills. They become of the view that they cannot help the patients out of the terminal...
