Ethics and Sustainability Assessment 2 Yadwinder Singh Randhawa 00189949T Introduction Leaders of business and contemporary organisations require being transparent and consistent in managing issues that arises at the workplace ethically. These issues could be any aspects like it can be social, economic or environmental but the approach to solve such concerns should be ethically and morally justified. Moreover, the boards of management in the organisation also scrutinise and critically validate any action taken or decision made is in sync with the organisation's moral aspects. Social Issue 1: Addressing any kind of discrimination at workplace and providing rights of the employee Taking reference from “Business ethics and sustainability”, (Lashley, C., 2016) issue 1 identified is very common social issues that is witnessed in the many organisation of present times. With globalisation and liberal immigration laws most of the contemporary organisations of today hire and have people that belong to different cultural background. Therefore, the ethical social issues that I believe is crucial is that there should be no discrimination at the workplace based on what cultural backgrounds one belong to or basis of gender, colour and rights of the employee are respected and maintained by the organisation. Acknowledging and sensitizing with the rights of the people who are working in the organisation. There are many ethical issues that surfaces while handling the confidentiality to the employee's personal information like married or divorce, compensation or family related background. Privacy of the employees is extremely critical and should be taken into consideration with utmost care. Comment by Rod Bamberry: Yadwinder: Always best to tie in the Ethical issue you’re focusing on, to a Specific Issue in a Specific Organisation. That then Avoids statements that are Too General. Ethical framework for addressing issue 1 and justification of choice Today any form of discrimination at the workplace in any organisation is not welcomed and is ethically wrong. In fact, if there is a culture of any kind of discrimination that can put the organisation in serious problems both financially, socially since there can be direct law suits. Moreover, employee rights like privacy to their information and maintaining confidentiality should be maintained. This can be implemented in the organisation by establishing certain code of conduct which could assist in making sure that the firm has open culture that is effective and induces accountability. There are numerous benefits in order to establish code of conducts like it can set clear norms and expectations for the people working in that organisation leaving less or no ambiguity in minds and can help in taking right actions. Taking reference from “Ethical Decision Making in Multinational Organizations: A Culture-Based Model”, (Robertson, C., &Eadil, P., 1999) approach of utilitarian theory states that any decision taken should be fair to the maximum number..Comment by Rod Bamberry: Yadwinder: It’s More than that. Give a Bit More Detail.” The Utilitarian Approach assesses an action in terms of its consequences or outcomes; i.e., the net benefits and costs to all stakeholders on an individual level. It strives to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number while creating the least amount of harm or preventing the greatest amount of suffering. It holds that every entity’s interests should be considered equally when making the decision, and this includes those of other species since they also are capable of suffering.” Comment by Rod Bamberry: Good you included a Diagram, but you need to Always recognise its Source/Author. Social Issue 2: Addressing any kind of harassment at workplace Workplace Harassment: - There can be several kind of harassments that can occur while different employees work together at a workplace especially those that are sexual in nature. Harassment that is sexual results because of uninvited and unrequested sexual heed that could be either verbal or actual which may impact the performance or condition at work. One of the most important area of ethical focus is to make the workplace free from any kind of harassment especially sexual harassment. There are huge punitive damages for which the organisation settle for magnanimous compensation for the victims. Furthermore, this also opens gateway to negative publicity and impact the brand images. Such behaviour that induces harassment like mentally, emotionally or sexually makes it impossible to work appropriately and generate a disruptive behaviour at work.Comment by Rod Bamberry: This would be a Good Place to use a Citation to identify what sexual harassment is.Comment by Rod Bamberry: This is where focusing on a Specific Case makes it Easier. Like the High School in Victoria that had to pay $1,000,000 to a teacher who was Bullied & Harassed by pupils in the school’s “worst class”. Despite the teacher advising a Number of times that the pupils’’ actions were having a deleterious affect on his health. Ethical framework for addressing issue 2 and justification of choice Taking reference from “Ethical Decision Making in Multinational Organizations: A Culture-Based Model”, (Robertson, C., &Eadil, P., 1999) one of the most optimum way to address this social problem that is very prominent in the organisation is to follow the rights approach. It is the duty of the management in an organisation to provide a fair and justified ground for everyone to perform and progress further. Another ethical framework that helps us address this issue is by using the Justice approach. As an organisation they must foster an environment that is conducive and thereby avoid any kind of harassment. If there is any incident of employee forcing oneself on others or taking advantage of the power that comes from the position should be immediately taken action as per the social contract. There should be a secure platform that hear such concerns and encourages employees to voice their concerns without any fear. Furthermore, there should be detailed investigation conducted to first comprehend the situation and validates the facts.Comment by Rod Bamberry: Try to use Different models where possible. To show you’re prepared to Search for alternatives.Comment by Rod Bamberry: Rights. Capital R. Better to use a Direct Quote here, with Correct attribution and Quotation Marks, to provide accuracy.“The Rights Approach focuses on respect for human dignity. This approach holds that our dignity is based on our ability to choose freely how we live our lives, and that we have a moral right to respect for our choices as free, equal, and rational people, and a moral duty to respect others in the same way.”Comment by Rod Bamberry: The fairness or justice approach to ethics has its roots in the teachings of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, who said that "equals should be treated equally and unequals unequally." The basic moral question in this approach is: How fair is an action? Conclusion The significance of ethics and business morals touches many aspects that is beyond the loyalty of worker, employee’s faithfulness and assurance or the quality of an administration of the bond formed while working. Similarly, with all business activities, the moral task of an organization is straightforwardly identified with productivity in both the short terms and for long haul since the organisation as always treated as a growing concern. Taking reference from “How reputation affects knowledge sharing among colleagues”, (Ensign, P. & Hebert, L., 2010) goodwill and reputation of any business in the encompassing network, peer organizations and individual financial specialists is prime and foremost in deciding if an organization is trustworthy of any investment.
