SA4 Model Response SCRIPT Introduce podcast segment Hello and welcome to today’s episode of In The News, where we’re going to do what we do best – break down a tricky topic so that YOU understand! Outline this episode’s topic Today we’re tackling a big issue, and one you might have some strong feelings about – discipline in schools. Discuss media article An ABC News article this week has outlined a new report into the juvenile justice system. The juvenile justice system is the system which deals with children under the age of 18 who are accused of committing a crime. The report found one of the biggest issues for kids in the juvenile justice system was interruptions in their schooling – and in particular, suspensions from school. What IS suspension? Suspension is when a student is sent home from school for days at a time as a discipline method after a serious incident at school. The article mentions research from the USA and Australia which points to what they are calling a "school-to-prison pipeline". This term is being used to describe the frequency of school suspension leading to young people who are more likely to commit crimes, and end up in jail. One child interviewed in the article said: "When you're suspended from school you've got nothing else to do [but] walk the streets.” Another student said that he had been suspended for up to 65 days at a time! That’s longer than a whole term! And while some of you might be thinking that sounds like a bonus holiday, this time away from the classroom is putting troubled children at greater risk of committing crimes. Plus, think about how much work they’d have to catch up on when they do get back to school! Eek! Discuss topic So, is suspension a big deal in Australian schools? Well, recent data shows us that school suspensions are on the rise. In Western Australia last year, there was a new high of over 18 thousand suspensions, an increase of 13% from 2020. In NSW, there was an increase of over 10%. Evidence has shown that suspension and exclusion doesn’t have any positive effects on students’ behaviour in the long run at all. Suspensions and exclusions raise serious ethical questions about how Australia’s school system accommodates disadvantaged, vulnerable or “at risk” students. These suspensions and expulsions are proven to affect students from diverse or minority backgrounds most of all, meaning students with a disability or from a poor or non-white background were far more likely to be suspended. Some governments, like that in SA. are starting to recommend against suspension or expulsion for students with disabilities or challenging behaviours. Outline response to topic (ie. what episode will contain) In today’s episode we’re going right to the heart of the topic. We’re going to talk to talk to Mark Morrison, principal at Macleay Vocational College, where “inclusion and respect” has led to a huge turnaround in student behaviour and disciplinary outcomes. We’re also hearing from a special guest host, Dylan, who is going to tell us about his first-hand experience in the juvenile justice system. But first, we’re going hear from Charlie Maher about The Clontarf Foundation, a program improving education and discipline outcomes in remote communities.
