Assignment 2 Written Assessment 2,000 words This assessment relates to learning outcomes 2-4 1. Identify a community that interests you. It could be a community of which you are a part. Some examples of how you might identify a community include: · · A community that is defined by geographic location, like a small rural area or an urban suburb; · A community defined by those who share an experience, such as a disability or illness; · A community of connection such as a specific cultural group; · A community of interest, such as a hobby group; · A community defined by those advocating for the rights of a certain group of people; · A community defined by a certain experience of disadvantage. 2. Conduct a needs analysis of that community using available data or information. Explain how community development principles would inform the completion of this analysis. (you cannot conduct a full needs analysis without involving community members in the discussion so they can articulate their own needs. Doing so would go against the principle of participation. However, you can conduct a preliminary needs analysis from the information available to you on-line via ABS or local councils, or from research in journals about your chosen community.) 3. Articulate the scope of a community development project and develop an action plan for working with that community to address the needs identified in your needs analysis. Explain how community development principles would inform your action plan. Referencing APA is the required referencing system for assignments in the School of Health. Follow the link at the top right of the page for information and examples. Tips: 1) You plan a project based on the information you have found out in your preliminary needs analysis. Then, in your assignment, you would need to explain how you include people along the way in order to uphold the principle of participation and empowerment. Plans can and do change once you start listening to people's ideas and you can talk about this in your assignment. 2) You can discuss a made up role and organisation. For example, in your needs analysis you might identify a main organisation that would be central to working with that community. 3) Neoliberalism and economically rational policies influencing the human services provides shape the context in which community development practice takes place. How might position compliment and contradict the principles of participation and empowerment in community development practice? 4) Yes, you could say the assignment is essentially a proposal with an action plan that is also informed by your knowledge of community development principles such as participation and empowerment. In relation to the HOW, this will depend on your project. How might you engage your community in the dialogue that needs to inform how the plan takes shape? What strategies might you use to engage people in dialogue, eg. community consultations, or other kind of gatherings, surveys? Then, depending on what your plan is, you might want to suggest some strategies for action including as many people as possible - awareness raising via social media, or through other means, holding events. Then you might consider how might you advertise these. Hope this helps. Don't forget to weave in CD principles throughout. This will make your discussion richer.
