ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT
The Gulf Cuisine
Introduction and background
In the previous summer, I worked in a restaurant that specialised in Middle Eastern cuisine. The restaurant is called ‘The Gulf Cuisine’ and is located in Terre Haute, Indiana. As the name suggests, it is restaurant that specialises in Persian food. It is a family-run restaurant that houses a moderate seating capacity of 30 diners. The restaurant offers both takeaways and dine-ins. The restaurant is not very old as it was opened only in 2008. Since, then the business has been enjoying steady growth and has been maintaining good customer ratings on all platforms.
Recently, I got to know from the manager, whom I am frequently in touch with about the new developments that have taken place at the restaurant. The two staffs have been terminated; four remaining staffs have been made to take some orientation classes that teach the importance of good behaviour and how to achieve the same. Furthermore, the organisation has started its own home-delivery system and has terminated their contract with a third-party logistics system that was in charge of delivery the food to its customers. Furthermore, they have decided to add some new items on their menu as they are vying to have an Indian cuisine section in their restaurant as well.
It seems the change is both incremental as well as transformational. The change of its menu (addition to be precise) is an incremental change as the restaurant was already involved in providing Persian and Middle Eastern cuisine hence, Indian cuisine seems like a wise change as the use of spices and condiments are almost similar. Furthermore, it was long overdue to address the issue with the staffs and most pertinently the stewards. Hence, changing their behaviour is a step towards transformational change.
