Key Facts of the Case (Assume the Marker knows nothing / hasn’t read the case – Identify the key facts)
▪Gladstone Harbour, located in ce
ntral Queensland is a major industrial hub and gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. It sharper is being transformed by a massive project of Dredging. It has been the major port spreading for over 200 hectares and a major port base for several years, and a major hub for marine life as well.
▪Experts say that this process of dredging can bring severe loss to marine life, as the harmful chemicals released during dredging go into to the water affecting the natural habitats of fishes.
▪ A deep channel is being built to give access to new six ports but this massive construction and release of heavy metals will ruin the marine life completely. While the construction is going on, the rest of the material is dumped in to the cold sea.
Management Problem (A clear 1-2 Sentence Statement to establish the key problems identified in the case)
▪The major problem associated with this case is that the marine life is being deeply affected by the massive process of dredging taking place to expand the project.
▪ Harmful chemicals like Aluminium and Cobalt and Zinc, enter into the water, thus entering the food web of the fishes and making them sick and diseased.
▪ The visibility of the water has decreased from 3 m to nearly 10 cms. which is totally abnormal and a matter of serious consideration.
▪The fish veterinarian, Dr.Mtlando believes that the fishes are getting contaminated badly.
Causes & Considerations: (Actual Cause/Root of Problem - Analyse key considerations/variables of case)
▪The main problem underlying the dredging project is that the harmful chemicals which are released as a result of dredging from the Gladstone Harbour enters the food web of the fishes, and is making them diseased and sick. The water visibility is becoming less gradually becoming a life threat to marine life.
▪Analysis says that even minute proportions of chemicals going into the water are making them sick. And if this continues, we may lose an important class of fishes.
▪Increased intensities of parasites infection has been examined in the fishes. The noise and turbulation during dredging, along with the mixture of chemicals in water is destroying the natural habitats of fishes.
▪Only when the environment is good, the ecological balance would be maintained.
Alternatives: (Establish and consider various key alternative solutions and options to address the problem)
▪The alternative solution is to keep checking the water chemistry at frequent intervals while the dredging project is going on.
▪Few other chemicals can also be released in water which neutralise the effect of harmful chemicals.
▪Fishes can be moved to a better place till the dredging project is not finished.
Supporting Theory: (Present any relevant theories, models or concepts from the literature to support ideas)
▪After getting serious reports of ill health of fishes in Gladstone, the Queensland government launched an investigation for fish health. And information...
