The Helping Up Mission, known affectingly as THUMB, is a substance abuse treatment, detoxification, and residential treatment facility. The Helping up Mission is one of many chapters within this organization. Other Chapters are Back on my feet and Christopher Place. The Helping Up Mission provides hope to substance abusers, the poor, and homeless. There are programs designed to meet the individual physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. The Helping Up of Mission is both an overnight shelter and the destination for long-term addiction recovery. The Helping Up Mission story began in 1885 in which the doors were opened to the community poor and homeless. Since World War ll, the focus has help addicted men experience the abundant life God intends. Helping up Mission Provides programs to meet the physical needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and exercise; productive responsibilities, defined here as work therapy; and general health. Psychological needs include educational and vocational classes, including basic literacy, adult basic education, college and trade school prep. Spiritual needs are spiritual solutions for a lasting recovery this is achieved by local churches, spiritual mentors, small groups, and counseling. Social needs generally revolve around healing broken relationships; finalizing legal and financial issues; and preparing to leave the Mission as a changed man (“Helping Up mission,”).
Back on My feet and Christopher Place Mission, vision and philosophy promotes the self-sufficiency of the homeless and substance abuse population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. Back on my feet and Christopher Place know that every major city have a homeless problem and while providing food and shelter are very important basic needs they know that something is missing. Both organizations Back on My Feet and Christopher Place will help to work to rebuild, revive, and re-energize individual. It is the goal of these organizations to help the individual find the road of happiness, hope, and opportunity (“Helping Up mission,”).
The need for the Helping Up Mission is great. Mental Health America estimates that 25 million Americans are affected by substance abuse. Substance abuse does not discriminate it effects, individuals, children, teenagers, men, and women, from youth, to young adults, and race and creed. People have been directly affected by substance abuse by injury or killed by intoxicated drivers; an additional 40 million people are affected. Society has been effective monetary because of the reduced productivity from the economy, property damage, accidents, and the healthcare are astounding. An estimated 12.5 million Americans are addicted to other drugs such as sedatives- -hypnotics or barbiturates, opiates, sedatives, hallucinogens and psychostimulants(“mental health America,”, 2012)
People who have problems with substance abuse and who are employed may lose or need help to leave their job or may need to take time off to get the proper help for treatment, this would result in them having a lack of source of income. Their income may have been drained by excessive drug abuse or wanting to get help for treatment. Continued substance abuse leads to the lost of a job, the custody of children, housing, and periodic hospitalization.
Unfortunately, a significant proportion of individuals with substance use disorders do not receive the care they need. Research shows that 47% of men and 41% women in need of treatment for illicit drug abuse are not treated. This unmet need is not limited to the uninsured- half of individuals in need of substance abuse treatment had private insurance. This inability to obtain treatment often result from a lack of education about treatment that is available and/or a lack of resources to pay for treatment. People often goes months, weeks, days and years without the proper treatment, the illness itself has caused people to become more addictive and more vulnerable to the risk factors. The need for preventive help such as substance abuse is clearly great( Slavit, Reagin & Finch, 2009).
The lack of funding is due to the treatment gap which must be better coordinated to maximize the impact of treatment dollars. Partnerships between the state and federal systems, as well as between state and community agencies should be strengthened to improve coordination that utilizes the unique assets of each system. Once problem is resolved, and states have more flexibility in spending federal treatment funds so both can provide services to communities and populations that they determine almost in need almost at risk and use of treatment methods most effective for those targeted areas and groups. This need is linked to our organization because once the treatment gap has been closed for individuals dependent on illicit drugs, or have a substance abuse problem, there will be access to recovery and we will be able to seek to enable with those individuals without health insurance to obtain treatment vouchers for addiction treatment services, including services from faith-based programs. Under the initiative, states will be expected to coordinate with a consortium of entities including community and faith-based organizations, all workplaces, and schools(‘Maximize flexibility in,”).
