Introduction Welcome to the Student Assessment Tasks for CHCCSL002 Apply specialist interpersonal and counselling interview skills. These tasks have been designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have learnt during your course. Please ensure that you read the instructions provided with these tasks carefully. You should also follow the advice provided in the Community Services Works Student User Guide. The Student User Guide provides important information for you relating to completing assessment successfully. Assessment for this unit For you to be assessed as competent, you must successfully complete two assessment tasks: Assessment Task 1: Knowledge questions – You must correctly answer all questions. Assessment Task 2: Portfolio – You must complete your portfolio document to demonstrate that you interviewed at least 3 different clients using specialised interpersonal communication and counselling interviewing skills. Work placement required You will require a work placement to complete Assessment Task 2. You will find more information about the requirements for work placements in the Community Services Works Student User Guide. Assessment Task 2: Portfolio Information for students In this task, you are required to demonstrate your skills and knowledge by interviewing at least 3 different clients using specialised interpersonal communication and counselling interviewing skills. You will complete and submit a Portfolio which incorporates templates and a reflective journal. You will need access to: a suitable space for counselling at least three clients a client consent form a recording device to record sessions your learning resources and other information for reference Portfolio template. Ensure that you: review the advice to students regarding responding to written tasks in the Community Services Works Student User Guide comply with the due date for assessment which your assessor will provide adhere with your RTO’s submission guidelines answer all questions completely and correctly submit work which is original and, where necessary, properly referenced submit a completed cover sheet with your work avoid sharing your answers with other students. i Assessment information Information about how you should complete this assessment can be found in Appendix A of the Community Services Works Student User Guide. Refer to the appendix for information on: where this task should be completed the maximum time allowed for completing this assessment task whether or not this task is open-book. Note: You must complete and submit an assessment cover sheet with your work. A template is provided in Appendix C of the Student User Guide. However, if your RTO has provided you with an assessment cover sheet, please ensure that you use that. Complete the following activities: 1. Carefully read the following information. Successful completion of this assessment task requires you to interviewed at least 3 different clients using specialised interpersonal communication and counselling interviewing skills. Your clients should be members of the public (not family or friends as this compromises the code of ethics and practice for counsellors). It is important that you provide evidence that you have completed this requirement and we have provided you with a Portfolio Template to help you. Before you begin this task, meet with your assessor to discuss the three clients who will be most suitable for you to work with to complete this assessment task. Keep in mind that confidentiality and privacy of these clients is essential. There will also be requirements around informed consent from these clients. Your assessor will guide you in relation to your informed consent requirements. However, generally you will be required to provide each client with a Client Consent Form. Please note that it could be possible to combine this assessment with another assessment where you are providing a counselling session for a client as the key focus of this assessment is using communication skills. This means you can simply run your counselling session for another unit you are completing and make sure you integrate the use of communication skills as per the requirements of this assessment. Speak to your assessor about this possibility. The skills and knowledge that you are required to demonstrate in relation to your work with the three clients are all included in your portfolio – so look at this in detail before you begin your assessments. In addition to identifying three people to work with, you will require access to a typical counselling set up, including a private space and comfortable chairs for you and your client and other items such as a small table where water and tissues can be accessed . As part of your Portfolio, take photos of the space in which you complete your counselling session. Remember, it is important to keep the privacy and confidentiality of the individuals you work with as high priority. Therefore, you must deidentify the clients who you work with. If you are unsure about how to do this, speak to your assessor. Tips for completing your portfolio Read through this assessment and your Portfolio Template before you get started and make sure you understand what you need to do. If you are unsure, speak to your assessor. Stay up to date! Complete your portfolio entries as you go and ask your supervisor to do the same. Providing organised, complete evidence forms part of your assessment. Stay in touch with your assessor. Ask questions, raise issues, check in, communicate. Most importantly, ask for help if you are having trouble! Complete your portfolio. Use the Portfolio Template to collect evidence for this assessment. There are three sections of your portfolio that need to be completed: Section 1 – Preparation In Section 1 you will include the details (de-identified) of the three clients you will provide counselling sessions for. You are required to fill in answers to all of the questions in Section 1. You must complete a Preparation section of the portfolio for each of the people you work with. Section 2 – Counselling session You are then to conduct at least one counselling session for each client and record details of this in Section 2 of your Portfolio. The session with each client should be for a minimum of 45 minutes. Remember you will also need to attach a recording of this session. You are to follow the key stages of a counselling interview and communicate effectively with each client including: Identifying barriers to communication with the client. Using strategies to overcome the barriers you identify. Considering the impacts of different communication techniques on the client and selecting and using suitable communication techniques Selecting and using suitable micro skills as follows: attending behaviours including active listening, reflection of content and summarising questioning skills (including open, closed, simple and compound questions) client observation skills noting and reflecting skills providing client feedback Observing and responding to non-verbal communication cues from the client Selecting and using when appropriate specialised counselling interviewing skills including: challenging reframing focussing Identifying and responding appropriately to strong client emotional reactions Throughout the whole counselling session you should take case notes, being careful not to distract the client with your note taking. You must complete this section of the portfolio for each of the people you work with. Section 3 – Reflection In Section 3, you will reflect on your counselling sessions by answering the questions included in your Portfolio. This will be a structured process of self-reflection and evaluation of your communication with the three clients as documented in Section 2. Submit your completed portfolio. Once you have provided counselling to three clients and completed all parts of your portfolio. Ensure all sections are completed neatly and clearly, all supporting evidence is attached and it has been deidentified to protect the privacy of the people you worked with.
