One of the most frequent types of non-inflammatory joint illness is osteoarthritis,
Commonly known as degenerative join
t disease (DJD)(Johnson, Victoria and David).
Osteoarthritis is characterised by deterioration and loss of synovial joint cartilage.
Osteoarthritis is the biggest cause of disability in the United States, affecting more than 40 million people (Abramoff, Benjamin, and Franklin).
It is more common in those over 40 who have had previous joint injuries or who have had long-term, heavy use lead to osteoarthritis.
More than 30 million Americans and 300 million people across the globe are affected by osteoarthritis. Pain, loss of function, and a lower quality of life are all consequences of this common cause of impairment in the elderly (QOL) (Abramoff, Benjamin, and Franklin).
Signs and Symptoms
There are a number of joints that may be affected, including the hips, knees, hands, and spine. Symptoms of osteoarthritis may appear gradually and become worse over time (Sinusas, Keith).
Pain
Stiffness
Tenderness
Loss of flexibility
Grating sensation
Bone Spurs
Swelling
Pain. Affected joints may ache during moving or afterward.
Stiffness. When individual first wake up or after being sedentary, joint stiffness could be more apparent (Johnson, Victoria and David).
Tenderness. When individuals put mild pressure on or close to the joint, they could feel it get sore.
loss of flexibility It's possible that individual won't be able to fully flex the joint (Sinusas, Keith).
Sensation of grating. When using the joint, they could experience grating sensations and hear crackling or popping sounds.
Spurs of bone. These additional bone fragments, which resemble hard lumps, might develop around the afflicted joint.
