JENKINS CONSULTING PRACTICUM Summer 2023 1. Company and sponsor name Survivor Friendly Sponsor: Jacqueline Cromity (Jenkins MBA) 527 Keisler Dr Suite 104, Cary, NC 27518 Ph: (919) 747-9336 Email: [email protected] Website: https://survivorfriendly.com/ 2. Company and sponsor background and contact info Survivor Friendly began in 2016 after the founder, Jacqueline Cromity, survived borderline Stage 4 Triple‐Negative Breast Cancer. Since 2007, the number of cancer survivors in the United States has increased from 11.7 million to 18 million in 2020 resulting in a continued decrease in cancer related mortality. Sadly, 39% of men and women in the United States will develop cancer in their lifetime. An average of 1.8 million cancer prognoses will be issued this year, with female breast cancer being the most common. 57,037 new cancer cases were reported in 2017 in North Carolina alone. The cancer treatment process requires compassion, embracement, and support. Based on her own experience, Jacqueline knew that women struggle with extreme alterations in physical appearance, and consequently, the fear of unacceptance after battling cancer. Due to the intense nature of treatment provided to cancer patients, there is a shortage of knowledge dissemination, support channels, and products for survivors to help them regain confidence in their daily lives. Furthermore, there is a lack of variety for different ethnicities, product vendors, and honestly, the personal touch needed to assist women with this transition. There is a need here in North Carolina and industry wide. “I can’t tell you the number of stores, multi-insurance claims, and just the sheer frustration of getting personal items to assist me during my journey to live”, said Jackie. Survivor Friendly was founded to empower women to regain their confidence more quickly through a community of supporters. Survivor Friendly used to work solely on donations to distribute free bags, which include beauty essentials and other supplies to help the healing process and return to “normalcy” of life after cancer. The organization also had a goal to establish a global survivor‐friendly community of businesses that will treat survivors with dignity, providing a haven for them to be served without shame. Businesses with the Survivor Friendly emblem have pledged to ensure their establishments openly welcome those conquering the challenges of cancer. In light of these issues, Survivor Friendly presents a one-stop solution to improving well-being, quality of life, as well as aiding survivors with overcoming daily challenges. In 2020 Survivor Friendly ® expanded into a durable medical equipment (DME) distributor focused on dispensing breast care items. We have 6 locations, including the original in Cary, Duke Caner Centers and two acquisitions in Winston Salem. NC and Shelby, NC. The organization’s goal is to become a one-stop-shop committed to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors, throughout their journey. The focus is carrying products that are often covered by insurance so that the organization has a steady cash flow. Survivor Friendly was established in 2016 by founder Jacqueline Cromity, who had battled cancer multiple times beginning in 2013. She was able to locate businesses that offered cancer patients aftercare services, but there was a lack of empathy, recognition of the trauma, and human contact. She was given an aftermarket prosthesis that was not even close to matching her dark melanin as a woman of color. To fill these gaps, Survivor Friendly was founded with the goal of increasing consumer awareness of side effects so that survivors could move from simply surviving to thriving at work and in their daily lives. Survivor Friendly sells aftercare supplies for both male and female cancer survivors. For compatibility with different skin tones, prosthetics are available in a variety of colors. To help the client feel as normal as possible, bras are offered in a variety of designs and hues. The company also sells other items like compression clothing, wigs, hat wigs, and other hair accessories. There are currently six locations throughout North Carolina, but the business wants to grow to provide access to many more survivors who want individualized aftercare services. Survivor Friendly Situational Analysis Problem Statement Survivor Friendly has seen substantial development and success in recent years and is now considering expanding its operations through either partnerships, franchising or consulting. However, there lacks a clear decision-making framework that can assist Survivor Friendly in weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each choice and determining the best route for its business expansion. Two organizations, one in New York and another in Georgia, expressed interest in partnering with Survivor Friendly's turnkey operation. Survivor Friendly on the other hand, is interested in working with these companies but is not clear about the business model that is best in the interest of Survivor Friendly. Survivor Friendly Situational Analysis 4 Project Description Survivor Friendly Situational Analysis The consulting team is tasked to provide a thorough decision-making framework that will allow Survivor Friendly to successfully evaluate and choose between partnerships and franchises as feasible expansion strategies. Financial ramifications, control and ownership, scalability, brand consistency, legal and regulatory constraints, and operational issues should all be factored into the framework. It should provide clear principles and criteria to aid decision-making and reduce uncertainty about the long-term outcomes of the selected expansion strategy.
