Prompt For this assignment please compare and contrast two symbols that are used in the culture wars. Be sure to focus on highlighting the similar values between the two groups while still mentioning the different cultural practices. · · · · · Identify a cultural symbol, practice, or belief system (be as creative as you want to be). · Interview as many people as you can to gather a complex understanding of how different communities understand this concept. You're welcome to interview friends, family, co-workers, classmates, professors, or strangers. · Write 2 paragraphs that compare the two beliefs (copy my format below). · Include 3 bolded words in your description that demonstrate similarities across the two communities (be as creative as you need to be). · Remember, your goal is to explain how the communities may appear to be opposites while still sharing some similar core values. Please demonstrate how these two communities are similar and also distinctly different. This is an example of cross-cultural analysis. Anthropologists examine cultural practices and belief systems across cultures in order to better understand how the practices and beliefs are constructed within each community. Sample Response In my lesson, I shared the following example to demonstrate how a little anthropological fieldwork could help us demonstrate the similarities between two seemingly opposing views. A large, powerful truck is resilient, and can overcome natural obstacles. These vehicles embody survival and hard work to their owners. Individuals of a conservative mindset firmly believe that self-reliance and determination are essential and are the highest moral values that preserve life and lead to national greatness. These individuals, therefore, believe that it is their duty to own and drive a resilient and resourceful vehicle. A hybrid vehicle does not rely exclusively on fossil fuels and is therefore more resilient. These vehicles slow environmental destruction and therefore better ensure humanity’s survival. Individuals of a liberal mindset firmly believe that preserving the environment is the highest moral value and that responsible actions lead to national greatness. These individuals, therefore, believe that it is their duty to own and drive a clean vehicle. Culturally, we may consider trucks and hybrid vehicles to be opposites of each other and we may even connect these vehicles to a person's political beliefs. But, in reality, owners of each vehicle draw upon the same value systems and this insight demonstrates that these people have more than they may have initially expected to have. . Prompt Our worldview is taught to us in a variety of ways and the media plays a big role in shaping our understanding of the world around us. For this assignment, you're going to identify some of the language and persuasive techniques that competing sources use to shape their followers' views of reality. First, identify a story that is being presented differently by two different news sources. You are welcome to use any news source that you like. If you're struggling consider checking Fox News and CNN as they usually present polar opposite views. Also, check Red Feed Blue Feed for some insight into how these headlines are being ingested on social media. Then, fact-check these two stories on Snopes.com. Or, if Snopes isn't helpful, check out some of the other options from Berkeley (Links to an external site.).If you're able to find a different fact-checking site then please let me know! Explain in 3-5 thoughtful, complete sentences about how each news source is portraying the story differently. Incorporate the support from Snopes to help you clarify the factual information. Remember that we are here to understand why humans need to behave in these ways, so try not to be judgemental. Rather, practice cultural relativism to help you understand why these different communities have different interpretations of the same events. Sample Response "If you consider CNN's coverage of the El Dorado wildfires to Fox News' coverage of the same fire, you'll notice a few substantial differences in the facts that each choose to highlight. My summary is based on CNN's article titled, "A gender reveal party sparked a wildfire in California, and the family tried to stop it with water bottles (Links to an external site.)" and Fox News' article titled, "California official says family behind gender reveal party that triggered El Dorado fire could have to foot the bill: report (Links to an external site.)." Both articles are reporting the facts that the fire was started by a gender reveal party and both articles mention that the family will likely have to pay the damages. But, there are significant differences which are interesting to highlight: · · · CNN compared this event to a 2017 event where a man who started a similar fire during a gender reveal party. This man was a U.S. Border Patrol Agent with misdemeanor violations who had used a rifle for the gender reveal. It seems like CNN is highlighting both of these facts in order to highlight the irresponsible actions of border patrol agents and to advocate for gun control. · Fox News' article is focusing heavily on the amount of money that the Trump Administration has paid to support California's fire relief. There is no mention of the fact that California is, in fact, a state that pays more (Links to an external site.) taxes to the federal government than it receives; it seems like this omission is intended to paint California as draining the U.S. of funds (rather than the reality that we give more to the country than we get back). Both articles are using the fire to advance their own, particular narratives about both California and the federal government."
