Abstract: In this laboratory investigation, the hardness of the Brass samples was studied by Brinell hardness tester and the hardness was found to be 114.38, indicative of its high strength and robustness.
Introduction: Hardness is a metric that measures the resistance of a material to local deformations such as plastic deformation, indentations, or scratches. It can also be used to evaluate flow stress or mean contact pressure [1]. When determining the level of hardness possessed by a material, one of the most important factors to take into account is the level of flow stress or mean contact pressure possessed by the material. The determination of whether or not a material is suitable for a certain application or the specific treatment that the material has been subjected to is the primary objective of the hardness test [2]. Due to the relative simplicity of its execution, the hardness test has emerged as the most widely used technique for the inspection of metals and alloys. The Rockwell hardness test and the Brinell hardness test can be used to determine the hardness of samples. With the Brinell hardness test, only one type of indenter which is a calcareous ball or a piece of hard metal is used and the indenter's diameter is measured.
