Technology and Change: It is believed the Internet, telehealth, and new clinical
information technology will begin to change the strategies and market-structure in
health care. How would this affect the health care institutions? Why? Do you believe
this would be a positive change? Explain.
Technology has revolutionized the field of health. According to the recent studies
conducted in United Kingdom, the mortality rate of patients has declined by 47% due to use
of telecommunication technology.
With the use of internet, the doctors sitting at one corner of the world can now assist
operations in other corner of the world. Moreover, telehealth (which is provision of health
concerned services through telecommunication technology) has simplified both the lives of
the patients as well as the doctors. The patients can now consult doctors over the phone or by
using internet (through facilities like web conferencing and video chat) they can get medical
help sitting at home. Moreover, the doctors can now purchase and recommend drugs to the
supplier and patient respectively by the use of information technology.
Like a coin has two sides, in the same way penetration of the Internet, telehealth, and
new clinical information technology into the health sector would have both positive and
negative aspects. It would prove to be positive for big health institutions which can afford to
upgrade themselves and the technology they use. They can train their staff according to the
