Assignment 3
Introduction
Technology has become integrated part of the healthcare organization. It has been seen that technology is responsible for revolutionized the healthcare industry from using robots for the treatment or installing system to communicate among healthcare professionals or retrieved information about the patient. One of the most successful technologies, which has been installed in most of the healthcare organization, is Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Electronic medical record is a network system whose prime function is to keep the record of the patient. This record includes medical history of patient, their medication, family background and all the necessary medical records like blood test.
Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
EMR, also known as electronic health record, can be defined as a digital system used to record the data of the patient. As mentioned by Keller (2016), this system runs on real time, which enables every professional to record and retrieve data within a span of few seconds. Electronic medical record consists of all the details of the patient from the day of its beginning of the treatment in the healthcare, which is accessible by authorized persons from anywhere in the world.
As noted by Olson, Rogers and Stutzman (2015), simply by searching the name of the patient, entire details can come to the screen. For example, if a patient met with an accident and come to the emergency department, simply by knowing his name, healthcare professionals in the emergency department can know about its blood types, allergies, diseases and medication. Getting information on time can save the life of the patients.
As noted by Chia-Hsien Su et al. (2018), all the necessary details of the patient can be available to everyone such as blood test, medical history and treatment, background of family, allergies, ongoing medication, preferences and prescriptions. All the departments such as laboratory, radiology, healthcare professionals and pharmacy have the details about the patients.
Benefits of Electronic Medical Record
Electronic medical record allows all the authorized healthcare professionals to access wide range of details about the patients in depth. As noted by Schwieger and McDonald (2015), the information of the patient access by the healthcare professionals include demography of patient, billing and insurance information, physical history and physician orders, medication list, allergens list, nursing assessment, nursing notes, graphics of vital organs, laboratory and radiology results, link for clinical information and support and reports for quality and safety personnel.
As an outcome of collection of all this information at one place, patients’ records are managed and have backup through the network. It develops the connection between all the healthcare professionals in the best possible way. As mentioned by Karsten et al. (2015), the data of electronic medical record has now become cloud base, which allows all the physicians to access the data of the patient anywhere in the world using their mobile phones if they have access to the system. In healthcare settings also, there are setups, which are helpful in accessing the data and allow the medical professionals to printout desired information.
It has been seen that patients are often transferred to many physicians, during this process, many medical errors occur. The use of electronic medical system is helpful in reduction of these errors. As suggested by Mason, Mayer, Chien and Monestime (2017), it provides standardization of the terminology and treatment provided by physicians, which often cause redundancy of the data and large papers to manage. This issue has been solved using electronic medical record. It allows patients to seek their personal details like blood profile and other results. Patients are restricted to access their information only.
Key Components of Technology
As noted by Karakurt, Patel, Whiting and Koyuturk (2017), electronic medical record system is designed to merge data from many healthcare services merging with the diverse components of the healthcare such as nursing plan, physician orders and medication administration record. There are two main kinds of components of electronic medical record — administrative system components and laboratory system components.
Administrative System Components
As mentioned by Delbene (2018), the main components of the electronic medical records include registration, admission, discharge and transfer (RADT) data. This data consists of very important information, which is needed to classify and evaluates patient. This data consists of the data, which includes name, demographics, next to skin, chief complaints employer information and patient disposition.
The registration system in electronic medical record system consists of patient identifier, which is alphanumeric order used for the external company use and it is unidentifiable to external users. The medical data of the...
