Overview of the Article
The c
ompanies underpaying the staff are no uncommon thing, to make the profit margin high the companies usually adopt such unfair means. The article acts as evidence of such ongoing malpractice in the largest supermarket chain of Australia. Woolworths can be considered as a supermarket giant in Australia and is one of the largest supermarket chains in the world. It is too held responsible for paying low wages to the staff in comparison to the work they provide to the company. This article also showed how the company has been manipulating the staff for more than a decade to work at a lower wage rate.
Relationship of the Issue in the Article to the Employee Diversity
Employee diversity is an important factor while considering the maintenance of the positivity of the workplace. Employee diversity gives many benefits to the company by providing them with the number of ideas that are rooted in the cultural background of the employees. The article is revealing about the supermarket chain of Australia, Woolworths who has maintained the diversity in the employees. However, after reading the article the idea of the employee diversity being misused in the company is vividly exposed (Moon, 2018).
The largest supermarket chain of Australia is known for benefitting the customer but it is negatively influencing the structure of the payment among the employees. Those employees who are working in the superior post in the office are getting better salaries and other types of benefits that the employees need to have, however, the employees who are working in the supermarket department are reduced to the inferior category and are paid very little (The Guardian, 2019).
Though the two sects of the employees are working for the development of the company is negatively differentiating among the diverseness of the employees. Treating diverse employees in different ways and giving one a superior position than others is not what a progressive company does. According to Kristinsson, Candi and Saemundsson (2016), by doing this the company has come under the charge of the violation of the workplace rules.
Relationship of the Issue in the Article to the Fair Pay Act
The issues that have been stated in the article are about the breach of the workplace law by the supermarket chain of Australia, Woolworths. The Fair Pay Act is related to the amount of payment that the employees get for the service that they provide to the organisations (Chanlat, Davel & Dupuis, 2013). It is a part of the workplace law where it has been stated that the employees will not be deprived of the amount of the wage that they deserve for their hard work. However, there are companies for earning better profit minimises the labour cost in the company (Gonzales, Lee & Brown, 2017).
The Fair Work Ombudsman will be investigating the case of the underpayment for the staff in Woolworths. The supermarket giant of Australia, Woolworths is held responsible for not giving the amount of wage that one section of the company employees is getting in respect to the other section. The company is being divided into two segments of the employees such as the employees who are responsible for managing the company's marketing and supply chain management and the employees who are responsible to work in the supermarket's department.
The gap between the two sects of the employees is major because of the payment structure they receive (Jokela & Soderman, 2017). The issue that is the article is nothing but the preferential issue that the company was doing for a long time. One sect of the employees was enjoying the benefits of the employment agreement whereas the other sect was deprived of the benefits of the employment agreement of the company.
