Termination Planning
Group counselling is a type of counselling wherein the counselling is being done in small or
large groups rather than individually. This form of
counselling is beneficial for connecting
different students having similar difficulties; thereby, encouraging and providing social
support to them. It is important to eventually put an end to any counselling session, i.e. to
terminate the group counselling; thus, termination is the final phase of group counselling. It is
being suggested that “the termination stage can be as important as the initial stage in that it is
the last interaction many clients will have with the counsellor” (Devin, n.d.). Most of the
skills required for the termination of individual counselling are also required during the
process of termination in group counselling.
There are some broad steps that are included in the termination process of group counselling
including preparation for termination (session checklist and paperwork specific to agency),
getting started with termination (setting agenda, reviewing the previous sessions and check-
in), discussing progress of client (giving feedback regarding progress, expressing
appreciation, exploring the perception of change of clients and affirming the efforts of
clients), future planning (exploring the areas of additional work and discussing the plans of
aftercare) and wrapping up the counselling (completing the paperwork and saying good byes)
(Module 14: Termination, n.d.). These are the basic steps that are generally followed in all
termination process; however in case of group counselling, there might be sometimes a need
of additional work during termination due to more number of people to deal with.
The process of termination should be planned properly in order to make the complete group
counselling successful. The termination should be on a well completion note so that the
whole group can obtain multiple benefits from the counselling considering that they have
spent their time properly in learning some useful things rather than considering that the
