Grain beetles: This exercise illustrates how the survivorship curves of two strains of grain beetles depend on environmental conditions. (Here x is measured in weeks.)
a. In Figure 1.52 two survivorship curves for the small strain of beetles grown in wheat are given. For one the ambient temperature was 29.1 degrees Celsius (about 84 degrees Fahrenheit), and for the other the ambient temperature was 32.3 degrees Celsius (about 90 degrees Fahrenheit).
Use the curves to decide at which of these two temperatures you would store your wheat. Explain your answer.
b. In Figure 1.53 two survivorship curves for the large strain of beetles grown at 29.1 degrees Celsius are given. For one the food was wheat, and for the other the food was maize. Use the curves to decide which of these two grains the large strain would be more likely to infest. Explain your answer.
