Introduction:

You've been invited to readThe Every 28 Hours Plays

Actions, or as many as you find it reasonable to expect. The plays are part of project to "to help [our] community address these issues, grow empathy, and become healthier" (every28hoursplays.org(Links to an external site.)).

Instructions:

First:

  • As per your previous reading assignment:

  • Read as many of theplays within the collection as you can.

  • Make note of the plays you like, understand the least, or inspire you the most.

  • Reread. Read some more. Discuss it with others in the class. Ask, "did you read this one?" "What did you think?" "Did you get the meaning of this one?" Approach your experience with each play as practice toward becoming a terrific, skillful, and delighted reader.

  • After having read and cogitated as many as you can, pick three that intrigue you. This is where Goldilocks comes in:

Next:

I want you to select:

  • one play that istoo easyfor you. It just doesn’t offer much of an experience. It is too obvious and easy to understand. It doesn't challenge what you think or feel you know.

  • one play that istoo hardfor you. There’s something about it that calls to you,but you can’t seem understand its main idea or what it is expressing.

  • one play that isjust rightfor you. This play speaks to your heart and your head. You are in possession of what it says and how it says it.

And, lastly:

Once your three plays are selected, you are towrite a paragraph about each play, detailing what you see in it, observing what is the play’s main idea and how that idea is demonstrated or communicated, to the best of your ability. In each paragraph, cite a line or an action to explain your appreciation of the main idea of each play.

Spend time, even with Too Hard play. Don’t just dismiss it.

NOTE: You cannot get this wrong. The only way to trip on this assignment is to look in a shallow and dismissive manner. Engage deeply, write honestly and clearly, and you will do beautifully.

Life by Numbers (The Hard Play)
This play was hard to understand for me because of the reflective nature of the content and theme. I was not able to connect to the numbers announced by the actors on stage. Their standing, at first, in the horizontal line was spontaneous—as per my understanding, it should have been like followed by one anothe
r, leaving the main stage area for the other player. For example, after one player has announced “one”, he is supposed to leave the main stage area while the other would appear, actor number two, and he will pronounce “two”, the counting will thus go on to twenty seven, the last mark. Also, there is a repletion in the counting i.e. the actors are four in number while the counting goes to seven which implies that the reverse order of will be applied to pronounce. However, it does not happen. Actor one again pronounces “five” followed by actor two “six” and again, concluded by actor one as “seven”. The counting marks leave no impression so far.
Additionally, theatrical projections are easy to understand when the audience observes the actions of the actors physically. It is more like seeing the acts from the personal perspective, driving out all essential elements of the content and the plot at the same time. When audience is disclosed to such “almost mime’ acts, there is a great deal of disturbance in thoughts. The simple counting can have as many implications as possible. In the context of the play, the life is having overall twenty seven numbers for the players. With looking upwards in the beginning, as far as I could understand the play, implies that the beginning of life seeks divine blessings to survive. It grows on gradual and steady bases. It has a specific meaning of its own that can be represented by small things like counting numbers. However, the point of physicality is missing the mark in it; there is no physical connection that readers can make with what is going on the stage.
Secondly, varying opinions may exist about the consequence of the play. It can be about the oppressive attitude of society towards a particular community. It may also include social dimensions of the issue like racism and segregation on various social grounds. The end of life at “twenty seven” may imply that the life is short and it becomes far too short for the person born in a community struggling to survive. The use of “kick” in the end projects the contemptuous behavior of the communities against each other. It may also represent the inter community conflicts posing severe questions over the social harmony. In spite of all of the above meanings were thought and processed, the play left me with a blank notion of understanding it fully. For me, therefore; Life by Numbers is an abstract play which has multiple dimensions to understand and to comply with the same, it is necessary to watch it first and then read it along.
Excuses by Ova (The Right Play)
The play Excuses by Ova was one of the easiest plays in the collection to read and understand. Clarity can be seen in the development of the content from the beginning to the end of the play. At first, the actors are symbolic in the play who appears to be the representatives of various communities living in American societies. The role of actor one, however, is the most influential one and ironically, he is the one who does not get his one sentence to be stated and well understood till the end. In fact, the...
