GNED 101 Major Assignment (20%) Description of Assignment: Create either a 2-3-page double-spaced essay, a PowerPoint presentation, a podcast, a video, or an infographic on any ONE of the topics below. In this assignment, you should give your own opinions, but you must also make reference to the relevant assigned reading and learning materials. Although you can do outside research, there is no need to use sources beyond the assigned readings and the learning materials on Blackboard. Submission Instructions: If the assignment is written as an essay, please submit it electronically as a Word document (.docx) OR .pdf (not a Mac Pages file; not a plain text file or email message) through the Assignments link. If you are submitting in another format (video, podcast, infographic, ppt slides), you can send it via email to
[email protected]. The assignment should be submitted by 11:59pm on Friday, November 27. CHOOSE ONE OF THESE TOPICS 1. Imagine that someone you know has expressed doubts regarding Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. What arguments might they make in opposition to the theory of evolution, and how would you counter these arguments? What evidence would you use to convince them that evolution is real? At least part of your answer must draw on the associated reading and learning materials on Blackboard. 2. According to Tatum, “When we think about our multiple identities, most of us will find that we are both dominant and targeted at the same time.” What does she mean by this, and how has your identity been shaped by this tension? Give specific examples and stories from your own experience of (a) what it is like to be part of the dominant group and (b) what it is like to be a part of a subordinate group. Which experience has been most influential in shaping who you are, and why? 3. Freeman looks at anxiety from four different perspectives: psychoanalytic, behavioural, cognitive, and neurobiological. When was the last time you felt particularly anxious about something? Was the anxiety strong enough to disrupt your behaviour, even momentarily? How would a psychoanalyst, behaviourist, cognitivist, and neurobiologist analyze your anxiety? Which of these approaches would most accurately describe the causes and nature of your anxiety? 4. Drawing on the reading and learning materials on Blackboard, identify and describe the core values and beliefs of liberalism, conservatism, socialism, communism, anarchism, and fascism. Which of the political ideologies discussed in the reading and learning materials (liberalism, conservatism, socialism, fascism, communism, anarchism) do you think is best for society and why? Which do you think would be the worst for society and why? 5. How will your dream job be affected by the forces of “globalization”? In your answer, discuss what globalization is and how it will affect (both positively and negatively) your ability to do your job. Finally, suggest ways in which you can address the negative impacts of globalization that you may experience in your work. At least part of your answer must draw on the associated readings and learning materials on Blackboard. 6. Drawing on the reading and learning materials on Blackboard, discuss the causes of climate change, two of the effects it will have on the planet, and what its impact on all life (including human life) will be. Finally, and briefly, describe three specific things you could do differently in your life to help limit the effects of climate change, and explain how doing those things will help limit their effects. Instructions Unlike tests, where you need to know a lot of different things all at once, this assignment asks you to think deeply about one question or issue. You certainly need to understand the ideas you are discussing, but what we are looking for is evidence that the ideas in your assignment are not just the first things that occurred to you, or something you found on the Internet that somebody else said. Creative and original thinking counts. At the same time, you need to know what you are talking about. You should show that you have read and understood the readings, and thought about things for yourself. Referencing When you are quoting or paraphrasing information from any source, indicate the name of the author, the year of publication, and the page or paragraph number (where available). • If it is an essay, you can include the reference information in brackets (intext citation) within the text of your assignment. At the end of your assignment, you should include a “References” list with the full reference information for each source that has been cited. • If it is a video or a podcast, you can just mention your sources within the recording. • If you are doing PowerPoint slides, you can list your sources on the last slide. • If you are doing an infographic, you can list your sources at the bottom of the infographic. When you are quoting something in a written assignment, indicate exactly what part of your assignment is a quotation by surrounding it with quotation marks. Remember that you need to provide a reference not only for direct quotations, but also when using a specific example, illustration, argument, or idea that someone else has developed. Students often risk being charged with plagiarism because they have failed to note the source of their ideas, when there would have been no problem at all with their assignment if they had indicated their sources. The most frequent reason for students being charged with plagiarism is that they have copied information word-for-word and not included quotation marks, or have copied and then altered a few words to make it look a bit different than the original.
