Glutathione is an antioxidant found in every cell and is important to our health because it neutralizes free radicals. This antioxidant is believed to contribute to our immune system and is found naturally in many foods. However, some research suggests that common, over-the-counter pain medications may lower the body’s glutathione level. Independent random samples of healthy male adults and of those taking medication for ordinary aches were obtained. The glutathione level in each was measured (in micrograms/10(10) erythrocytes).
a. Conduct a one-way analysis of variance test to determine whether there is an overall difference in population mean glutathione levels.
b. Construct the Tukey 95% confidence intervals to isolate any population means contributing to an overall difference. Draw a graph to represent the results.
c. Because we are interested mainly in whether pain relievers affect glutathione levels in healthy males, find the Bonferroni 95% confidence intervals only for the differences between each pain reliever mean and the healthy adult mean. Based on these results, do you believe pain relievers lower glutathione levels? Justify your answer.
