Global Sporting Event Assignment Brief: ASSIGNMENT BRIEF – INDIVIDUAL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT (50%) You will choose an event from a list supplied in seminars. You can then choose any city that you think would be suitable to host this event. You should then complete the following 2 tasks: TASK ONE (approx. 1000 words) Identify and discuss at least 5 key elements of successful bidding that have been outlined in the literature. Choose one of these elements and explain why this is a particular strength for your bid in your selected destination. TASK TWO (approx. 2000 words) Prepare a bid document for your selected destination to host your chosen event, using the template provided on the following page. COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES, MARKETING & MEDIA How would the Event be marketed to maximize exposure for the sport including a clear strategy to attract international as well as nationally based spectators. How do you plan to attract and support international media at the Event. Other ways in which the event will generate income eg sponsors, merchandising etc Assignment learning outcomes On completion of these assignments, students should be able to: 1. Analyse and discuss underlying issues behind the decisions to stage nationally and internationally significant sporting events. 2. Critically assess the role of global sporting events in the development of tourism in host destinations 3. Critically evaluate legacy and sustainability issues relevant to selected case studies 4. Research and assess the potential problems that can be associated with hosting global sporting events 5. Evaluate the role and importance of sponsorship, media coverage and visitor engagement to the success of selected events. COMMON SKILLS It is School policy that Common/Key Skills should be embedded into module delivery and assessment at all academic levels. The interactive nature of the seminars fulfils most of the requirements by encouraging discussion, organisation and communication, and group discussion. By examining the assessment criteria, you will note that Common Skills are also contained within them.
