Effective Communication and How Effective is Communication
Last week I have been taught about the effective communication, its basis of understanding alon
g with various theories and models. As per the following effective communication, I have been educated about the communication is always purposeful and goal-oriented in health and social care and a great level of skill and knowledge is required to for them to be effective. This entire module has been a new kind of experience for me, it is not that I did not know anything about communication but through assessment, I have been enlightened with many other things in order to make it effective. Although some of the concepts were previously developed, I have learnt much other stuff. It resulted in further developing my aspects towards the previous concepts.
For purposeful communications in health and social care, roles such as public health practitioners, mental health nurse, residential care manager and community development are used as examples. According to the Hargie’s essential skills components (2018), skilled performance and skilled behaviours are discussed, I could not understand few points and was helped by my peers who explained them to me in much easier terms and I realized it was not that complicated (Windahl, Signitzer & Olson, 2008).
Theory of Communication
Communication skills according to the studies of Dr Mehrabian in 1967, highlights the vital role that non-verbal communication plays in the expression of feelings and emotional states. I too agree that non-verbal communication skills are highest amongst all the three types (verbal, para-verbal and non-verbal) of communications. In non-verbal communication, we use our whole body (kinesics). Words are obvious ways to express but the fact is also that we communicate through our tone, posture and gesture, facial expressions, behaviours, clothes and appearance. Silence and stillness are also important forms of communication. For example, when we talk in a library, a non-verbal type of communication is used to silence us. Solar and Surety are effective listening skills used in non-verbal communication.
