Germany modernized, industrialized, and urbanized faster than any other European country in the second half of the 19th century.  These processes transformed Germany politically, economically, and culturally.  No city in Germany represented modernity more completely than its capital, Berlin.  How did the urban culture of Berlin embody a new way of life for millions of Germans?  How did it contrast with the lives that many millions of others continued to lead in small towns and rural areas?
