Georg Jensen is a 57-year-old male admitted to the ICU for acute pancreatitis. His mother died 4 months ago, and shortly after that he lost his job. Recently, he has been drinking a gallon of vodka a day. In addition, he has a history of diabetes mellitus. He was brought to the ED by ambulance when his brother found him unresponsive at home.

He was intubated in the ambulance on the way to the ED and remains intubated and ventilated due to hypoxia. In the ED, his serum hematocrit was 45%, his WBC 21,000 µL (mm3 ), BUN 35 mg/dL, creatinine 1.4 mg/dL, blood glucose 425, and serum
