Sustainable Development goal 11 targets to develop sustainable cities and communities inorder to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Major aims to be met by 2030, set under this goal include- Access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services, upgradation of slums, accessible, safe, affordable and sustainable transport options especially to women, children, elderly and disabled, protection of cultural and natural heritage, better disaster management and prevention of deaths due to polluted water and air, management of municipal and other wastes generated in cities, provision of safe, inclusive and accessible green public spaces, Strengthened national and regional development planning so that economic, social and environment links between urban, peri urban and rural areas can be established, Building cities and communities that manage resource efficiently, are adapted to climate change and resilient to disasters. Lastly the goal also targets to support countries that are least developed by providing them with financial and technical assistance so they can build sustainable and resilient building using local materials and expertise. Thus sustainable development goal 11, targets to build cities and human settlements that provide a decent living to all citizens and are inclusive in the sense that all contribute to development and prosperity of city keeping in mind their social and environmental responsibilities.
The importance of this goal lies in the fact that poorly managed cities result in unrest, spread of diseases, expanding slums and insecurity in society, many of which are witnessed in some or other part of world. Cities with abundance of modern facilities and resources attract people looking for employment and business opportunities from different regions. They are focal points of education, learning, healthcare, arts and creativity. However the resulting migration and urbanisation of cities has resulted in excess pressure on their limited resources and facilities. Currently cities provide livelihood to almost half of the global population and these numbers are expected to rise atleast by 10% in another ten years. This puts sustainability of cities, especially in developing nations at great risk. With increasing numbers every year, many cities face problems such as lack of affordable housing, clean air and water, improper roads, public transport and traffic management, unsafe pockets for vulnerable groups ( disabled, women, children, elderly), lack of green spaces and open grounds etc. All these factors have resulted in a number of health issues, life style diseases, crimes and accidents.With increasing housing costs, the share of income spent on rent has been...
