From the book’s website, use the data set, foxnewsdata. (The data come from DellaVigna and Kaplan 2007). With an observation being a town that did not have Fox News in its cable-channel lineup in 1996 and that is from one of 28 states that are covered, regress the 1996-to-2000 change in vote share for the Republican presidential candidate among all votes for either the Democratic or Republican candidate (r_vote_share_ch) on the changes in the male and Hispanic share of the population (male_ch and hisp_ch). Do this for those with at least 2000 votes for 1996 (votes1996). (Note that this model excludes the key explanatory variable for this data, foxnews, which is a dummy variable. We will discuss dummy variables in the next chapter and then add in foxnews to the model in the exercises.) Answer the following questions. a. Interpret the coefficient estimate on male_ch. b. For a town with r_vote_share_ch = 0.1,male_ch = −.1, and hisp_ch = 0.2, what is the predicted value of the dependent variable and the residual? c. Interpret the predicted value and the residual. d. Interpret the R2 . e. Which of the explanatory variables has the larger standardized effect?
