From housing to healthcare to educational opportunities, inequities persist for many minority families, based upon race. Though the United States has made progress in racial equity, the impact of institutional racism continues. Sociologists define this form of racism as a pattern of discrimination against people of color by any institution. For example, banks denied loans to black Americans in certain neighborhoods in the middle part of last century. Segregation created resource and educational disparities for black children. Or, consider that many urban neighborhoods lack parks—removing opportunities for recreation. In your post, identify an example of institutional racism and its current effect on minority families in education, housing, or employment. Explain how institutional racism can still influence families in their pursuit of a greater quality of life.
In response to your peers, strengthen their posts by offering one additional insight about how institutional racism still influences families.
Be sure to reference your textbook reading from Chapter 3 and the resource reading material in your post and responses.
