For this task, you are required to analyseoneof the short opinion pieces listed in the Moodle assessment block using the terms and ideas discussed in the readings and lectures. You must look at the language, structure and claims of the text and isolate those features that would need to be changed if the document were to be written as a position piece. This assignment focuses on analysis, so we do not want to see simply a summary of the opinion piece.


To support your argument, you must use the articles on academic writing in week 2: see chapter two in Brick, Herke and Wong for details on the difference between position and opinion, and the article by Bowell and Kemp in the week 2 Moodle block for further information on rhetoric and argument.


Any sources referred to in the text must be properly referenced using the Harvard system and placed in a reference list.

Pill testing is an emergent technique that is used in many countries especially in the southern hemisphere to test the harmful ingredi
ents of an unknown substance that a person intense to use and wants the person about the harmful effects that can be brought about by using that substance. In the given article, we can find the creators opinion about the method and that needs a number of changes if it was to be printed as a position paper. In the article we find that the author is opposed to the idea of pill testing and tell us that is the harmful effect of pill testing are more than the positive sides of this process. For portraying that opinion, the author takes help of an opinion paper in which the author puts forth arguments against the topic. In order to transform the same article into a position paper the arguments need to be well acknowledged and a few more changes need to be made in order to achieve perfection. Changes that are necessary in order to make the given article a position paper are described in this article.
Changes to be Made
In the given literature, we find that drug abuse, especially in parties and music concerts, is a big concern for people of all age groups and cultures, all over the globe. Therefore, there is a rising need for controlling this increasing drug abuse and substance experimentation by youngsters. As opined by Pru (2019), youngsters have taken the way of drug abuse, overdose of drugs in search of an elated experience, and have taken to unknown substances in search of a mood lifter. In this article, the author argues that creating awareness is a far better option than testing of substances and letting the user use a punishable amount of substance that is not harmful for health. While putting this opinion the author put significant effort in stating that this testing of substance is doing more harm than good and is giving rise to a number of concerns all over the globe. In a position paper, this argument has to be accompanied by the opposing argument and both the reasons have to be acknowledged (Barratt et al. 2018, 226-236). We must acknowledge the reason for testing of substances on the part of the authorities involved because it might seem a fruitful way of taking the drug abuse and listening the number of deaths that is caused by the overdose of drugs during a stipulated time.
