Cumings published "next to of course god America i" in 1926 a part of that mainly focused on an anti-war context. The poem satires patriotism of people during World War II. The poem is a loosely structured sonnet that features a speaker satires America and the war. The poet had made several nationalistic comments that feel exaggerated and empty. It is hard to determine whether the speaker is sarcastic or whether the speaker thinks in that manner. But the poem invites the readers to analyze the critical aspect of excessive and unquestioning patriotism. The poet removes himself from the poem and uses a speaker within a speaker and it directly corresponds with the poet's life experiences (Cummings). The poem expressed the outspoken attitude of the poet and his willingness to go against the war.
The poet has experimented radically with forms, punctuations and discards traditional techniques but emphasizes a highly idiosyncratic aspects of poetic expression in this particular poem.
