Introduction
The impacts of the severe experiences of life break down the morale of living of the indivi
duals. They tend to develop several types of mental disorders; however, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder is one of such issues which are commonly faced by them. Altogether, these two disorders become the source of ongoing depressive attitude development as well as suicidal tendencies in the behavioral approach of people. Psychologists perceive modern lifestyle changes as one of the major sources that emerge with the possibilities of living in stress for a long time which consequently becomes the cause of the disturbed mental health. The following is the case analysis of the Dr. Smith who is a professor of Sociology in the leading university. His case conceptualization is processed through the observation of his life and the standpoints of disturbed marriage, abusive childhood period as well as separation from the children making him depressive, a patient of PTSD as well as man of remarkable attempts to commit suicide.
The Case Overview: Ethnic Profile
At first, it is important to review the ethnic profile of the fictitious character of Dr. Smith. He was born in a catholic family in the era of industrial growth of United States. He became subjected to this growth as his parents constantly forced him to study more and more to become successful in life. The natural demeanor of his childhood period was missing due to the constant conflicts of his parents at home. His mother even filed the case of domestic violence against his father and she eventually won it legally. She got the custody of Smith and decided to make him a ‘civilized and knowledgeable’ person, an intellectual beings who has the ability to respect women as much as possible. However, there were frequent encounters with his father as well which did not go well.
Additionally, as the early learner of things, Dr. Smith could observe that his personality was utterly confusing; he was living under the great expectations of his mother to become the best intellectual and it simply added to the pressure which he already had. However, his frequent encounters with his father also resulted in the kind of freedom that he wished from the studies. Altogether, his mental condition began changing about setting up his carrier. He also got sexually abused by one of his teachers in the school and it broke him completely from within. The teacher was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment but it did not help him to recover from the mental shock of abusing. His peers used to bully him and give him as much mental harassment as possible due to the sexual tragedy with him. His mother had to choose home schooling for a while due to the events at schools as Smith was not able to adjust with the worsening conditions and it was ultimately affecting his academic skills.
The Teen and Adult Life
For Smith, it took him like seven years to show some signs of recovery from his problems. As a teen, his mother took him to California so that he can complete his basic studies and move ahead in life. She hoped that the change of environment would work for Smith but it did not happen. As a teenager in California, Smith initially enrolled in the local high school from where, he graduated with flying colors. His main focus remained over completing his studies first and then become the man of his mother’s choice. Everything seemed to go as planned when he could disclose some of the facts of the past to the people whom he trusted the most in this new environment.
However, he made some so called ‘loyal friends’ here to whom, he could tell about the sexual harassment episode and from that point onwards, it became a subject of mocking not only in the school but also in the community where he lived along with his mother. Instead of helping the lonely family, the society did take the advantage of their condition and forced them to leave the premises where they were comfortably living. His mother again had to migrate to New York where she got employment in a local departmental store. The earning gave strength to the family of the two and Smith post graduated in sociology from one of the reputed universities around.
He enrolled for the doctorate program and completed it without any further hassles. He also received the honorary medal for serving the community during his doctoral project which showed no signs of any mental weakness of disorder to appear though; he would speak of ending his life sometimes to his mother...
