For this assignment, you will composing a three to four-page paper (approximately 900-1200 words, not counting the Works Cited section), analyzing one of the texts from our syllabus. The essay will forward a thesis that interprets the text in a particular way, and the essay will develop that thesis. In the process, you’ll need to provide
A brief description of the story, including a two to three sentence synopsis of the plot.
Relevant information about the historical period, and/or cultural context, indicating how the text reflects that context.
A thesis that links this author and text, at least loosely, to the course theme: "The pursuit of self-fulfillment in context of dominant social ideologies"
Analysis of 4 or 5 passages from the story, poem or play that help illustrate your thesis. Include paraphrases and short quotes from the passages you’ve selected, as needed, but be sure that your own words “outweigh” the quoted passages--don’t overquote, in other words. (This will make up the “body” of your paper. This section should be 400-600 words in length, and should be broken into 2-5 paragraphs).
Integrate up to 3 peer-reviewed secondary sources (through none are required). Indicate each source with tag words; for example, "According to John Smith, Kafka uses the cockroach metaphor 'to convey the protagonist’s sense of isolation from his family and friends' (22). Indeed, Gregor Samson’s alienation is evident in the first exchange between him and his father the morning after he has changed into an insect…."
A conclusion that reiterates and “drives home” the point you’ve been making from the beginning.
