Key Terms
Provide your own definition for each of the following terms:
· Patronage
Patronage is the funding or support given to artist as a payment of their art. In early modern Europe, the patron played an important role in the development of art. Patronage of art served as demonstration of money, position and power, as well as propaganda and amusement. The patron who create a work of art wanted it first and primarily as a religious item.
· Contrapposto
Contrapposto is an Italian word that means "opposite" or "counter." In art, it alludes to the human body's natural standing stance, with weight resting on one leg and a body movement to compensate. Adam and Eve, Engraving, 1504, by Albrecht Dürer is a prime example of it. In a comfortable state of Contrapposto, Adam and Eve lean towards one other.
· Loggia
A loggia is a column-supported covered, open-walled chamber, corridor, or hallway. The Romans adored their countryside villas, which were nearly invariably constructed around an open-air courtyard. Renaissance architects expanded on Roman concepts, finding new applications for antique architectural elements such as loggias. Loggias became a popular feature of domestic construction during the Italian Renaissance.
