For this assignment, you will be using the data tools available atUCR Data Tool. Select “Go to the table-building tool” and then use the “Agencies, by State” option to identify two cities of interest to you. (If a city is not available in the database, make a different selection.) When presented with the option, select “Single agency reported crime” as you research each city so that you can examine multiple variables over multiple years. Examine the property and violent crime rates in recent years for both cities. (Rates account for population size, typically by reflecting the number of crimes per 100,000 in the population.) Based on what you find, complete the following:

1. Summarize the overall trends in violent and property crime rates for each city.


2. Compare and contrast the two cities’ rates and trends: What similarities do you see between the cities, and what differences?


3. Applying information that you learned In this unit, what are some possible explanations for any differences in rates/trends between the two cities?


4. Applying information that you learned in this unit, what are some possible explanations for the trends over time in each city—has crime increased or decreased in each location, and what might account for those changes?


5. Assess whether these statistics provide enough information to generate ideas for crime reduction. Explain your answer.

Your completed assignment should be completed in a Microsoft Word document and contain approximately 1,000 words of polished text. The document should be double-spaced with Times New Roman 12pt font and 1” margins. While you will not be required to include citations for the crime data that you draw from the UCR website, if you incorporate any wording, ideas, or facts aside from the data requested above, you should cite in proper APA format.
