Answer to Question 1
Two non – native species introduced in the great lakes area are common reed, reed canary
grass (epa, 2013). These species are introduced in the area due to human activity and
interference in the area (glin, 2013). Non – native species are capable of repro
duction at every
fast rate hence they are able to invade the whole ecosystem very soon.
Common – Reed:
Once introduced they are capable of reproduction at a very high rate over marshy plants and can
easily take over them by crowding native plants which affects the hydrology of the area and its
balance. Common Reed also increases fire potential and occupies all the space below ground as
they have large roots and easily chokes out any new possible vegetation and its growth (pca,
2013).
Reed canary grass:
Reed canary grass like Common reed also forms dense and highly productive class of grass. This
species is capable of very fast growth and inhibits, eliminates the competing species in an area.
Along with that it has very less value towards the wildlife because very less number of species
feeds on grass. (eco, 2013)
Purple Loosestrife:
Purple Loosestrife is also like the above two is capable of expanding its population at a very fast
rate and threatening the non native species in that area. Recent research indicates that these
species are also tolerant to soils as well.
At present Asian carp is the upcoming threat to the great lake ecosystem, scientists are trying to
make permanent electric barrier to prevent the invasion of this species (epa, 2013).
