For this assignment you should not have a defined thesis as such, but rather identify a knowledge deficit and frame a research question. Note that the previous assignment got you to hone in on our research skills and to evaluate credible sources. You need to continue that same mode of research as you work towards your final paper. In this assignment we move past simply procuring sources, to identifying your specific research question. So the first step here is to outline clearly what your problematic is. Then, as a second step, motivate the question: why is this an important issue to you? How familiar are you with the issue? Third, provide a brief audience analysis: What does your audience know (what are you assuming) - what is their background knowledge, experience, training and cultural context? What is your audience’s point of view on the topic? Receptive or suspicious? Bored or interested? Friendly or hostile? What considerations do I have to make to accommodate your audience’s attitude toward your final paper? What is my relationship to the reader? Ask if you have more than one audience. Which audience does my purpose most clearly target? The proposal should be no longer than about 2-3 pages.
