Samsung Electronics is a South Korea based electronic giant founded in the year 1969. Samsung specializes in producing a wide variety of electronic devices both for domestic consumers as well as for huge industries. Samsung currently has its operations in more than 80 countries and employees a workforce of approximately 308,745 people. Samsung not only excels in producing electronic devices but is also an established player to manufacture electronic components such as semiconductors, chips, lithium-ion batteries and flash memory.
During the years 1969-1987 when Samsung Electronics was coming into existence it was established as an industrial part of the Samsung Group. As the group was not a as strong as other players in the market in terms of technology Samsung decided to cooperate with Japanese firms and established a Joint venture with Sanyo and Sumitomo Corporation named Samsung-Sanyo Electric. In the year 1970 Samsung joined hands with Japan’s NEC Corporation and the subsidiary was named Samsung-NEC. This subsidiary was established to manufacture audiovisual devices and home appliances. Samsung came into the semiconductor industry in the year 1974 after it acquired Korea Semiconductor.
In the year 1980 Samsung acquired another producer who produced electronic switching devices named Korean Telecommunications. By the year 1981 Samsung electronics was able to establish itself in the market. In the year 1988 Samsung Electric Industries merged with its subsidiaries to form Samsung Electronics. In the year 1988 Samsung came up with its first mobile phone which did not gain much popularity until 1990. The company then began to change its strategies in the mid 90s by investing into new technologies. Samsung then adopted the vertical integration strategy which proved to be extremely beneficial for the electronic manufacturer and led to the exponential growth of the electronic giant in the 2000s till date. The company has expanded so immensely that it has managed to gain a position at number 15 in the Fortune Global 500 list (Fortune Global, 2019).
1.1 Products and services of Samsung
The product categories of Samsung can be broadly divided into digital media, telecommunications, home appliances, semiconductors and LCD digital displays. The digital media category includes devices such as computers, laptops, printers etc. digital display category involves televisions and monitors. Samsung also manufactures entertainment devices such as DVD players, camcorders and MP3 players. Samsung excels in manufacturing home appliances such as washing machines, microwave ovens, air purifiers, vacuum cleaners etc. Semiconductors category includes semiconductor chips such as SRAM, SDRAM, and Smart Card IC etc. Telecommunication devices include fax machines, mobile phones, mobile intelligent terminals and satellite receivers. Samsung has started manufacturing organic light emitting diode panels for televisions, laptops and mobile screens.
1.2 Countries of operation
Samsung Electronics is a big name in the electronics market and is a global name spread across various countries of the 6 continents out of seven. It has its operation in more than 80 countries across the globe. Samsung Electronics has its major R&D, engineering, manufacturing and sales operations in countries such as South Korea, Japan, India, China, Germany, Russia, USA, Canada and UAE to name a few. As mentioned by Lee, Lee and Heo (2015) expansion of Samsung has led the brand stand competitively in the electronics market.
2.0 Core resources and capabilities
Samsung is one of the leading electronics company in the international market. Its resources and capabilities have enabled Samsung to deliver quality products in budget prices to its customers and have done exceptionally well in satisfying its customers all over the globe. Moreover, this electronic giant has managed to have strong brand equity and is also involved in corporate social responsibility. The skills and expertise along with the other monetary resources have helped the brand grow exponentially into the global market.
They focus mainly to enhance their technical capabilities through the incorporation of new technology into their devices and products. They also focus on innovating new products and to come up with creative solutions to meet the needs and wants of the masses that are technically advanced.
