For this assignment, I am asking you to write an essay about your family. In this class you will learn about the sociological and theoretical significance of the family as not just another social institution, but the MOST important institution in society. In addition, I will expect this to be a reflective course for you. Therefore, this assignment is an opportunity for you to write about your family AND show me where you are in terms of understanding and processing class material by incorporating theory and concepts to describe your family in the context of our weekly readings. More importantly, this assignment helps me better understand you and the direction lectures and discussions should take, as learning and knowing about my students is paramount to my commitment as your professor. Revisit the functions of a family as an institution and tell me how they have fulfilled or unfulfilled those functions. In 4-5 pages describe your family…simple as that :). Things to consider should include: number of siblings, yours and your parents’ relationship status, do you have children? how many? if not, how many in the future or why not? What has influenced that decision? your race/gender/ethnicity/religion and how these structures have shaped your family life/experiences/expectations…etc. By the time this assignment is due, we'll have covered many important theories and concepts; it is therefore expected that in your explanation youinclude sociological conceptsthroughout, utilize ofoneof the major theoretical perspectivesin Ch. 1,andciteyour text or media for a total oftwo sources(cite APA style only) to back-up your thoughts.
