Introduction
In an organization there are various kind of activities which takes place in order to accomplish organizational goals and objectives. To manage all the activities in proper manner, there is a big role of leaders in order to properly align all the tasks and responsibilities in order to ensure that the workforce remain aligned with the strategic plan for accomplishing the task. The leaders have to inculcate the leadership style in order to motivate the employees to attain the higher level of performance through the string human relations. Leadership also plays an important role in maximizing the efficiency and also helps in achieving the organizational goals. In this report the detailed discussion is done with respect to the leadership style along with the discussion of the leadership theories in order to determine the perceived effectiveness of the leadership style in organizational operation.
Introduction of Leader
The leader that is going to be introduced is Dr. Angelo McClain is the Chief Executive Officer of National Association of Social Workers (NASW), who lead efforts that grow and support the social work professional in the United States (Carter et al., 2020). Dr. McClain had joined NASW he had served for six years as the Commissioner of Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, where he oversaw a budget of $850 million and a workforce of around 3500 employees to address the reports of the abuse and neglect for the state’s most vulnerable children, partnering with the families in order to help them with the better nurture and also to protect the children.
Leadership Style of Dr. Angelo McClain
Dr. McClain possessed certain leadership characteristics that helped him to achieve such a remarkable feat in the social welfare sector. Generally, the social work leadership is mostly aligned with the transformational form of leadership. As discussed by Sun et al. (2017) that the transformational style of leadership is such style which encourages the leaders, inspires and motivate employees or group of people for bringing innovation and create a change, that will help to grow and shape the future success of the society. In this style of leadership, with the identification for the need of change, the leaders create vision for the change, inspires and also guide others to work towards the change also execute the change as a team. These characteristics are possessed by Dr. McClain helps him to build the desire to work, to be ambitious, with a vision to initiate great things, which he already did with his work towards the society.
As a social worker leader like Dr. McClain, there are certain specific characters that one must possess to connect deep down with the society. Crede et al. (2019) have discussed that there are certain important and fundamental leadership skills a social worker must acquire during their training period, which are:
· Having a deep insight towards the understanding of different types of human behaviour
· The ability of the person to help others during their needs and also develop them and help others to succeed
· The ability to observe the situation from various perspectives
· Having a strong ethical context
· Having the respect towards a diverse culture and people
· The ability to participate in the decision making process
· To develop the ability for the consensus building
· The ability to identify problems
· The ability to listen and communicate in a proper manner
· Outing more emphasis on the teamwork activities
· The ability of the leader to intervene in any conflict situation and try to resolve the issue as early as possible
· The ability to recognize the power differentials
· And the ability to managing any type of change implemented or occurred
Characteristic of Social Work Leader
A proper leadership style required to develop the competencies of leadership. As discussed by Jais et al. (2021) that many experts believe that the effectiveness of the leadership is one of the single biggest differentiators for the successful career of the social work leader. As a social worker, there must be some extra leadership skill set, which must be better than most of the professionals during the start of their career. However, there is always the area for learning more and also gather experience. Therefore, it is very much vital to spot the variance amongst the leadership and the management, which basically are never essentially comparable. One can be a manager without being a leader, and one can also be a manager without holding any kind of managerial position. As discussed by Megheirkouni (2017) that noted management consultant Peter Drucker have described two notions in the following ways, which are: management is performing activities in the correct way and the leadership is performing the correct ativities.
As a social work leader, one must be around the leaders, and they must try to regulate the behaviours and skills these leaders hold, which they will inculcate in their leadership style.
