TI Corruption Index
Transparency International (TI) is an international non-profit organization that governs the corruption around the world in different economies found in 1993. It is an organization having its head office and primary place of functioning in Berlin, Germany. The purpose of this is to take corrective actions against corruption. TI had been developing various measures to fight corruption and one of the achievements in measuring corruption was to introduce Corruption Perception Index (CPI) in 1995. The measures of corruption used by TI are Global corruption barometer and Corruption perception index. The total number of members of TI are currently more than 100 chapters of nations who are willing to fight against corruption in their home countries. The objective of TI is to end the corruption in the world and to ensure world economy is free from corruption.
Corruption in a country is defined as powers being abused by the people having high position and authority for the benefit of their own which is not in the interest of the country, in turn creating loss of revenue to the government to fill in personal pockets. TI, in the year 2010 had developed strategies that categorizes among people, institutions, laws, values, network, impact for a period of 5 year.
CPI usually ranks countries based on how corrupt their governance system is and how are they dealing with these issues of corruption. CPI is calculated based on the data collected by various institutions having good reputation and goodwill. CPI is a measuring tool which is highly criticized because of the perception of the people that data collected is inaccurate and completely based perception of people in that country. CPI cannot compare the data of corruption year on year because the method used every year to measure corruption differs from the earlier year. There is no uniformity in methodology to measure the corruption.
