For the last cemury or so. thinkers have debated the relative influence of 11at11re and 1111rture over human behavior. By 11at11re people ordinariJy mean biology, chemistry, and genetics. By 1111rt11re, they mean something like culture, customs. and education. What does Sacks's essay contiibute to the debate? On the basis of the evide1Jce he provides, can we ever say that human behavior is predetennined by nature? ls it predetemtined by nurture? Does the nature/nurture debate leave something out-the abiJjcy of individuaJs to create their unique reaJiry? What is the relation between biology. culture, and the individual, judging from Sacks's account?
