For the following scenarios, describe what messages you might use to provide supportive or corrective feedback.

a. Carlos joined the team at PemCall, a local customer service calling center, about two weeks after Jenna came on board. Both went through a portion of their training together and competed to be the top of their class. However, since that time Carlos is always considered first in promotions and special assignments, and he has moved up to team leader very quickly. Since taking over Jenna’s team, he has noticed her performance slipping. She also calls into work sick more often and has taken less initiative during special promotions. He is concerned about her numbers, but at the same time Carlos feels sensitive to the fact that Jenna may feel overlooked or taken advantage of. How can he provide Jenna with feedback in a performance interview? What messages could he use that could communicate corrective feedback in a sensitive way?

b. After her recent performance evaluation wasn’t as positive as she had hoped, Rosalinda’s performance has met or exceeded company standards for several weeks now. John, her supervisor, has noticed that she implemented all of the changes he suggested and really took to heart the constructive criticism he provided. How can John communicate positive, supportive feedback in a way that makes Rosalinda feel valued and appreciated?
