Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly advanced in recent years and has been hailed as a technology that will revolutionize society. However, as AI has become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, concerns about its negative impact on society have grown. While AI has potential benefits, such as improving efficiency and enhancing productivity, the negative impacts of AI on society cannot be ignored. By the virtue of this assignment, I share with you my extensive research on this aspect of AI along with the evidence that supports the claim that AI negatively impacts society more than it benefits society (ENGELKE, P., 2020).
Artificial intelligence negatively impacts society more than it benefits society
AI exacerbates economic inequality: AI automation can displace jobs, leading to increased economic inequality. A 2021 study by McKinsey Global Institute found that AI could potentially automate up to 45% of current work activities, affecting jobs that are repetitive, predictable, and routine. This could lead to job displacement and inequality as low-skilled workers are replaced by machines (Manyika, J., Lund, S., Chui, M., and Bughin, J., 2017).
AI reinforces existing biases: AI algorithms can reinforce existing biases in data, leading to discriminatory outcomes. For example, facial recognition algorithms have been shown to have higher error rates for people with darker skin tones. This can have negative impacts on marginalized communities, such as increased surveillance and policing (Greiman, V., 2021).
AI threatens privacy: AI can collect and analyze large amounts of personal data, leading to concerns about privacy. For example, digital assistants such as Amazon's Alexa and Google Home collect data on users' conversations and habits, leading to concerns about data privacy and security (Marr, B., 2022).
