Assignment: Your Food Voice (3 pages total) Students will reflect on their personal experience to explain their food voice. The development of your food voice: 1. Introduction: (½ page) Identify the cultural group that you associate with based on your birthplace or that of your parents and grandparents. 2. Development of your Food Voice: (1½ pages) Explain what you learned about your food culture from your parents/adult guardians: a. Introduction
United States is a place, where many people come to build up their life and dreams. Similarly, my parents along with my grandparents have come down to United States from Dominic Republic, to attain a better lifestyle. Dominicans are the fifth largest population in the United States, and counts for just 4% of the total Hispanic people living in United States. We belong to a culturally rich background with poets such as Junot Diaz, Hector Rivera, Elizabeth Acevedo and many more renowned and noted laureates have their origin in our race. The Dominican Americans have an increasing presence over the financial aspect of United States, by contributing a lot while being engaged with a number of businesses. However, we Dominican are known for our food culture as well; having expertise in different types of cuisines such as traditional peripheral as well as medicinal foods. In this paper, I would represent the importance and influence of our culture over our food voice, and the benefits associated with our foods.
Development of My Food Voice
We have a rich food source, which is embedded in our culture and its practices. Gomez-Luciano et al., have discussed that the Dominican Republic cuisine is made up from the combination of different cuisines. The cuisine is a combination of Spanish, French, Indigenous Taino and African culture influenced cuisines. Mainly the traditional cuisine consists of rice, beans, tostones, which is also known as fritos, meat like chicharron de pollo, which is basically a deep-fried chicken and dairy products, such as cheese and milk and along with that fruits. These traditional foods are garnished with colorful red peppers, green peppers and cilantro. These foods are included in our daily meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner....
