Then came Gen X, people born from 1960 to 1980. Gen X was succeeded by Millennials: those born between 1981 to 1996. People born between 1997-2009 are Generation Z.  Behind them are the AlphaGen (2010-2025).  Understanding these generations and the availability and familiarity with technology is critical to understanding the success and acceptability of the blockbuster watch brand, MVMT.       At the time of MVMT’s market introduction, millennials were just moving into the workforce.  Unlike other demographic groups that preceded them, millennials were the first out of the gate in many regards when it came to technology and technology use.  This was the first target market on which MVMT focused and, perhaps not surprisingly, the one to which the company’s founders could (as millennials themselves) best relate.    America’s second youngest generation, Gen Z, is the first generation really incapable of remembering a world without the internet.  A defining attribute of Gen Z rivals the size of the Millennial generation:  “A defining attribute of Gen Z is their use of technology,” says Christopher Wolf, an analyst at Goldman Sachs (Wolf, 2015). “Some people are calling this generation the ‘digital natives’.”  Wolf (2015) says this generation is quick to be influenced by on-line reviews and references and on-line word of mouth matters.  This is the generation that uses this on-line word of mouth to look for deals and so find themselves with an inordinate amount of economic influence when it comes to on-line purchasing.  At the same time, GenZers are decidedly more financially conservative; far moreso than their millennial counterparts.  Nearly half of them spend ten hours online every day and they are used to multi-taking on several different platforms.  (Wolf, 2015)   It is anticipated that the Alpha Gen, the youngest generation in line, will be the first to have a seamless integration of technology into every aspect of their life. In fact, Alpha Gen and technology are so intertwined that it is estimated by the time they are eight years old, they will surpass their parents in technology skills. They will never know a world without the internet of things, smart technology, and virtual reality.  Artificial Intelligence (AI) will drive their reality.  Members of the Alpha Gen will interact with their friends and peers mostly through social media and they are connected throughout the day. That also brings with it concerns about privacy and online bullying as social acceptance also becomes a matter of how much they are liked online.
